Oversized map and activity kit bring history to life at Midland school

Students at Huron Park Public School in Midland are following the footsteps of Laura Secord, Sir Isaac Brock and other historical figures this month. An oversized (11 by 8 metres) map and activity trunk from Canadian Geographic Education is currently ‘visiting’ the school, featuring War of 1812 forts, towns, battle sites and First Nations villages.

“We are excited to have this amazing learning resource in our school that encourages discovery of Canada’s history and geography in an interactive way,” says Cathern Lethbridge, Principal at Huron Park.

The map is the first of its kind in Canada, produced by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) with the support of Canadian Heritage. Five sets of the map and activity kits are currently travelling around Canada.

The map is in use at Huron Park until Dec. 19. The school is located at 425 Robert St. in Midland.
