Banting Agri-Business program wins food and agricultural awardJune 24, 2015 Category: NewsBack to News Page

The Food Partners Alliance (FPA) of Simcoe County has awarded the Simcoe County Food and Agriculture Charter Champion School Program of the Year to the Agri-Business Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program at Banting Memorial High School. The Charter Champion Awards recognize the individuals, businesses and organizations working hard to create a strong and vibrant food system in Simcoe County, and celebrate contributions towards local food security.

The Agri-Business SHSM has been encouraging students to pursue a career within the agricultural sector since 2008. Within the program, students receive hands-on experience with small animals and livestock while developing knowledge of animal physiology, nutrition, behaviour and welfare. The program has also partnered with the local agri-food community for mentorship to earn certifications and training in workplace safety, pesticide safety and livestock medicine and first aid.

Other Simcoe County District School Board programs were nominated for Charter Champion Awards in various categories. They include:

- Allandale Heights Public School, Learning Centre Classroom Garden, nominated for Best Community Garden, Best Community-Based Food Skills Development Program and Best School Program
- Stayner Collegiate Institute’s Gardens ‘N Greens, nominated for Best School Program

All award winners and nominees will be honoured as part of the Simcoe County Federation of Agriculture’s 75th Anniversary Celebration on July 9, 2015.
