The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) and Barrie Police Service have launched a bullying reporting tool that will give students an additional opportunity to anonymously report on this behaviour at school. The “Report a Bully” project was launched at Eastview Secondary School on Friday, October 6. The new ‘Report a Bully’ button on the Eastview and Barrie Police websites allows victims, witnesses or third party complainants of bullying to click and follow the prompts to create a report. Reports submitted will be received by the Barrie Police Community Services Unit for review and further action.
“This partnership with the Barrie Police Service will support the SCDSB in ensuring that our schools continue to be safe and welcoming places to learn and work,” says Daryl Halliday, Superintendent of Education, SCDSB. “We realize that these tools are reactive and are commonly used after incidents take place, and encourage our students to continue to be proactive by letting their peers know that it is not ok.”
“I would rather walk through the hallways of a school where I feel welcome and where people are not going to judge me. Here at Eastview, they do a good job,” stated Eastview Grade 11 student Abby Davy. “I feel really welcomed and comfortable here.”
The SCDSB already provides a Safe Schools Reporting Tool, on their website and on school websites, that students can use to report bullying anonymously. These reports are received by the school principal and followed up on by school staff. In addition to reporting tools and protocols, SCDSB schools actively participate in Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week and plan significant events related to Day of Pink.
