On Nov. 15, over 1,500 of the Simcoe County District School Board’s Grade 2 students, in Barrie and Innisfil, will receive copies of Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure. The books are being donated by the Rotary Clubs of Barrie and Innisfil.
Rotary Club of Barrie member and lead organizer of the book donation initiative, Jason McArthur, Rotary mascot Sprocket and JC Gilbert, Deputy Chief, Paramedic Services, County of Simcoe, will visit Hewitt’s Creek Public School at 1:50 p.m. to deliver books and read the story to students. SCDSB Chairperson Peter Beacock, Hanne Nielsen, Superintendent of Education, Partnerships and Lifelong Learning, and Paula Murphy, Superintendent of Education, will also be in attendance.
“Our partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Barrie and Innisfil allow opportunities like this for the students to get excited about reading and discuss values and positive character traits,” says Hanne Nielsen, Superintendent of Education, Partnerships and Lifelong Learning. “We are so pleased with the dedication of these outstanding community members who want to make a difference in our students’ lives.”
Aligned with the SCDSB’s character education program, Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure is a story of a young entrepreneur named Andy who, with the help of a mysterious voice providing guidance and support, learns the value of truthfulness, fairness, goodwill and partnerships that benefit everyone involved. The school board’s character attributes – Integrity, Responsibility, Cooperation, Caring, Respect, Optimism, Honesty, Empathy, Courage and Inclusiveness - align with Rotary’s 4 Way Test of - Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
On Nov. 15, Rotary members, local dignitaries, paramedics, firefighters and military officers will deliver books and read to students in all of the SCDSB’s Barrie and Innisfil schools. This is the third book donation that the Rotary Club of Barrie is making to the SCDSB’s Grade 2 students.
