​This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, November 22, 2017. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca

Report from Student Trustees
Student Trustee Gillian Hunnisett noted that Student Senate met with staff from the equity, wellness and research departments to discuss and provide feedback on the School Climate Survey. Student Senate members shared ideas and initiatives from their schools. A Google Classroom for members of Student Senate to continue to share their successes has also been created.  

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole

The Board ratified the following recommendation taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, November 22, 2017:  

  1. That the Board approve the School/System Administrator Eligibility Lists as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1 School/System Administrator Eligibility Lists–November 2017, dated November 8, 2017.

D-4-a Business & Facilities (November 1, 2017)

The Board approved the following motions: 

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2325 – Environmental Policy, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No.  BF-D-1, Revisions to Policy No. 2325 – Environmental Policy, dated November 1, 2017.  

  2. That the Board approve the revised Annual Renewal project listing and the revised School Condition Improvement project listing, as set out in APPENDIX A and APPENDIX B of Report No. BF-D-2, Capital Expenditures Annual Renewal and School Condition Improvement Revisions, dated November 1, 2017.  

  3. That the Board approve the transfer of Grades 5-6 of the FI program, and subsequently phase in up to Grade 8, from Mundy’s Bay Public School to Huron Park Public School in September 2018, as set out in Report No. BF-D-3, Program Review 2017:01 – Mundy’s Bay Public School, Huron Park Public School, dated November 1, 2017.

D-4-b Human Resources (November 8, 2017)

The Board approved the following motion:  

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 3035, Workplace Conflict Resolution, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. HR-D-1, Review of Policy No. 3035, Workplace Conflict Resolution, dated November 8, 2017. 

D-5-a Special Education Advisory Committee Member

The Board approved the following motion: 

  1. That the Board appoint to the SCDSB SEAC, effective December 1, 2017, Mary Riggin Springstead as alternate member until December 31, 2017 and member effective January 1, 2018 for CTN, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointment, dated November 22, 2017.

Notice of Motion for Next Meeting

Vice-chair Lloyd shared a notice of motion for revisions to the By-laws. This item will be discussed at the December Board Meeting.

  1. Article II: Meetings of Board of Trustees – Order of Business for Regular Board Meetings
    - Add under Item #2, Land Acknowledgment of Traditional Territory

    - Add under Item #4, Land Acknowledgment of Traditional Territory

Questions and Proposals from Trustees

Trustee Ley commented on the opening of the Collingwood Youth Centre, which she recently attended. She noted the many resources and opportunities that are now available for youth in the Collingwood area. She also noted that in conversations with many of the students volunteering, they spoke highly of their experience at Collingwood Collegiate Institute.

Trustee DaSilva noted the success of the recent Individual Education Plan (IEP) Information Session that was hosted by the Special Education Department.

Chair Beacock commented on his recent attendance at several events, including the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Regional Meeting, SCDSB Years of Service celebration, Rotary Book Day and the Orillia Central Preschool grand opening at Orchard Park PS. He also noted the recent Personal Support Worker graduation ceremony, and the success of that program, given that most, if not all, graduates have job offers upon completing the program.
