Minister of Education announces funding for new school, additionFebruary 20, 2015 Category: NewsBack to News Page

Ontario Minister of Education Liz Sandals visited Midland Secondary School to announce that the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will receive capital funding to build a new secondary school in Midland and an addition to Barrie North Collegiate Institute (Barrie North). Both projects were School Capital Consolidation business cases submitted to the Ministry of Education in October 2014.

“We’re pleased to receive funding that will support the needs of these communities,” says Peter Beacock, Chairperson of the Board. “We’re committed to providing innovative, quality learning environments, and this funding announcement shows that the Government of Ontario supports that commitment.”

The new North Simcoe Secondary School will be built on the site of the current Midland Secondary School playing field. It will support student learning and achievement in a new building as a result of the consolidation of Penetanguishene Secondary School and Midland Secondary School.

The addition at Barrie North will accommodate students moving from Barrie Central Collegiate Institute to Barrie North after Barrie Central closes on June 30, 2016.

Notes Janis Medysky, Associate Director, “Our staff worked diligently to prepare business cases to help the Ministry of Education understand our needs based on the recommendations of our Accommodation Review Committees. Consolidating schools is not an easy process, but we look forward to continuing to foster vibrant school communities in Barrie, Midland and Penetanguishene, and across our board.”
