French as a Second Language Program Reviews

The SCDSB offers programming options such as French as a Second Language (FSL) in our elementary and secondary schools. In some circumstances, these programs draw students from a larger geographical area than their normal attendance area. The programs are reviewed on a regular basis to help to balance enrolment across the county and to minimize impacts on home school student populations.

Read the French Program Review FAQ.

Current FSL Program Reviews

Mundy's Bay Public School and Huron Park Public School
A program review has been approved to balance student enrolment and to minimize impacts on home school student populations. A proposed option is splitting the FSL program, with some grades attending Mundy's Bay Public School and the others attending Huron Park Public School. All students in the English program would continue to attend their home school.

This review is scheduled to take place during the 2017-18 school year.

Bradford Public School and W.H Day Elementary School
A program review was approved by the Board in 2015 to balance student enrolment and to minimize impacts on home school student populations. The review was going to examine a twinned French as a Second Language (FSL) program, with students in French Immersion in Grades 1-4 attending at the former Bradford Public School site and students in FSL in Grades 5-8 remaining at the existing W.H Day Elementary School site.

In order to ensure we are considering the long term needs of the broader Bradford community, the SCDSB is recommending no changes to the French program at W.H. Day at this time.

Grade 7 – 12 School

In some communities, balanced enrolment is achieved by introducing a Grade 7-12 school. This helps to ensure schools maintain high enough enrolment to be viable and offer a range of programming options for students.
