Safe connections: cyber security and digital well-being

On April 28, the Simcoe County District School Board’s (SCDSB) Parent Involvement Committee is hosting Safe connections: cybersecurity and digital well-being, a virtual information session for all SCDSB parents/guardians. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. via Zoom.

Register to attend at [LINK]. Registration will close at 4 p.m. on April 24.

Presentation 1: Cybersecurity
This presentation focuses on cybersecurity and identity theft, helping parents/guardians and students understand what online risks look like in 2026. Guest speaker Natalie Fleming will explore how personal information can be exposed through oversharing, weak passwords, and public chats, and why nothing shared in apps, games, or online platforms is ever truly private. Participants will learn what scammers look for, how to maintain a safe digital footprint, and how to recognize signs that a child may be experiencing inappropriate online interactions. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of creating a safe environment where children feel comfortable turning to a trusted adult if something online goes wrong.

Presentation 2: Digital well-being
The presentation focuses on building healthy digital habits and a balanced approach to technology use at home. Guest speaker Ulrica Jobe will explore the impact of technology, social media, and AI on children’s mental health and safety. Parents/guardians will learn strategies for setting healthy digital boundaries, talking with their children about online risks, and creating an environment where children can ask for help.
