Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee Maya Aldis provided a report on the Student Senate meeting held at Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School on Nov. 27, 2019. Maya shared that the meeting was well attended, with 27 students representing seven different secondary schools. Guest speakers included Elaine St. Pierre from Canadian Blood Services and Irfan Toor, Principal of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The guest speaker presentations were shared live through Instagram Stories at scdsb_studenttrustees.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendation taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, November 27, 2019:

  1. That the Board direct staff to enter into detailed discussions with the Town of Wasaga Beach regarding facility partnership opportunities at the proposed new Wasaga Beach elementary school, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-1, Community Partnership Opportunities – Town of Wasaga Beach, dated November 6, 2019.
  2. That the Board direct staff to enter into a lease extension, ending August 2020, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-2, Adult Programming Space - Wasaga Beach Lease Extension, dated November 6, 2019.
  3. That the Board approve the School/System Administrator Eligibility List as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School/System Administrator Eligibility List – November 2019, dated November 13, 2019.
  4. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-2, School Administrator Appointments, dated November 13, 2019:

Questions and Proposals from Trustees
Trustee Beacock acknowledged the passing of Councillor Scott Macpherson and the passing of Deputy Mayor Scott Jermey and shared his condolences with the Oro-Medonte Council members and residents.

Trustee O’Brien shared that he was invited to judge student presentations at Terry Fox E.S. Students working with the Downtown Barrie Business Association researched the impacts of the construction on downtown Barrie businesses and presented their findings. 

Vice-chair North shared that he attended the 100 Years of Tech event at the Education Centre. He noted that all secondary schools were present with displays and commended them for their efforts to promote the skilled trades pathway to students.

Trustee Boswell indicated that he has been touring the schools in his area and is very impressed with all the programming taking place in the schools. 

Student Trustee Maya Aldis shared that the Student Trustees presented information regarding the role of student trustees and their initiatives at the Parent Involvement Committee on Nov. 19, 2019.
