This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.
Report from the Student Trustees
Dean Maltby, Superintendent of Education, provided a report on behalf of the Student Trustees. Superintendent Maltby shared that the Student Trustee Elections took place virtually on February 16, 2023. Superintendent Maltby indicated that the 2023-2024 student trustees will be formally introduced at the Board Meeting this March. The incoming 2023-2024 Student Trustees are Ayesha Maryam from Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School, Aalia Majid from Orillia Secondary School and Lucy Duncan from Bear Creek Secondary School.
Trustee Tribute
Trustee Grummett recognized Carl Wright, Crossing Guard at Hillsdale Elementary School.
Trustee Grummett shared that Carl was recently named one of Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guards through Parachute Canada, a national charity dedicated to injury prevention. Trustee Grummett, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, thanked Carl for his commitment to student safety and for building strong community connections.

The Board ratified the following recommendation taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, February 22, 2023:
- That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School Administrator Appointments, dated February 8, 2023.

D-2-a Notice of Motion from the January 18, 2023 Board Meeting
That the Board approve the following motion:
- That the Board approve that a letter be written by the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Chairperson to the Minister of Education and copied to the local Members of the Provincial Parliament, as well as the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) and all board chairpersons, requesting the Ministry of Education to allow Student Trustees in the Province of Ontario the right to independently move and second motions during Board meetings.
D-2-b Notice of Motion from the January 18, 2023 Board Meeting
That the Board approve the following motion:
- That the Board approve exploring opportunities to utilize SCDSB school facilities for community programming in a partnership structure with the City of Barrie. This effort will consider development of reciprocal use agreements and a preferred access process to support community programming at SCDSB locations.
D-4-a Business and Facilities
The Board approved the following motions:
- That the Board approve an attendance area review be undertaken, commencing in the fall of 2023, that includes Coldwater PS, Marchmont PS, Georgian Bay District SS, and Orillia SS, as set out in Report No. BF-D-I, 2023-24 Accommodation Plan, dated February 1, 2023.
- That the Board approve an attendance area review be undertaken, commencing in the fall of 2023, that includes Orillia SS and Twin Lakes SS, as set out in Report No. BF-D-1, 2023-24 Accommodation Plan, dated February 1, 2023.
- That the Board approve the schools closed to new out-of-area students for the 2023-24 school year, as set out in Report No. BF-D-1, 2023-24 Accommodation Plan, dated February 1, 2023.
- That the Board approve the continued pursuit of facility partnership opportunities for the capital projects under consideration, as set out in Report No. BF-D-1, 2023-24 Accommodation Plan, dated February 1, 2023.
- That the Board approve the Accommodation Plan, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. BF-D-1, 2023-24 Accommodation Plan, dated February 1, 2023.
- That the Board approve that a letter be written by the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Chairperson to the Minister of Education and copied to the local Members of the Provincial Parliament, all local municipal councils and the County of Simcoe, as well as the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) and all board chairpersons, outlining the need for greater provincial investment in our schools due to the rapid growth in student enrolment within the communities of Simcoe County.

Finally, that all previously issued trustee updates be published in the board packages and minutes archive on the SCDSB public website.
