SCDSB Update 3 – September 25, 2024

Report from Student Trustees
Student Trustee Simmons provided a report on behalf of the student trustees. Student Trustee Simmons reported that the first Student Senate meeting of the school year took place on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Student Trustee Simmons shared that the meeting was attended by students from Georgian Bay District Secondary School, Maple Ridge Secondary School, Bear Creek Secondary School, and Bradford District High School. Student Trustee Simmons noted that students discussed a number of topics, including the use of cell phones in school, vandalism, vaping, and highly caffeinated energy drinks.

Trustee Tribute
Chair Lloyd presented Dennis Iriowen, Grade 10 student at Bear Creek Secondary School, with the Trustee Tribute for his outstanding accomplishments as a student athlete. Chair Lloyd shared that Dennis began training on the Bear Creek Track Team in Grade 9. Dennis won every 100 metre and 200 metre race in his Grade 9 year, with victories at South Zones, GBSSA, Central OFSAA Regional, and finally Provincial OFSAA. At OFSAA, Dennis broke the record in each of the 100 metre and 200 metre races on his way to two gold medals. Dennis ran a 21.67s 200 metre race and a 10.77s 100 metre race. Chair Lloyd congratulated Dennis and wished him all the best in the coming year.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
There were no items arising from the closed session meeting of the Committee of the Whole.

Consent Agenda
All recommended actions outlined in the Board Meeting Reports were approved by the SCDSB Board of Trustees during public session of the regular meeting of the Board.

D-4-a Business and Facilities
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve revisions to Policy 2345 – Community Planning and Partnerships, as set out in APPENDIX B of Report No. BF-D-1, Revisions to Policy 2345 – Community Planning and Partnerships, dated Sept. 4, 2024.
  2. That the Board approve revisions to Policy 2350 – Disposition of Surplus Real Property, as set out in APPENDIX B of Report No. BF-D-2, Revisions to Policy 2350 – Disposition of Surplus Real Property, dated Sept. 4, 2024.

Reports/Updates from Staff
Scott Young, Superintendent of Education, provided an update on the status of the Violent Incident Report to the Board. Superintendent Young noted that the report will be coming to the November Program Meeting.

John Dance, Director of Education, provided an update on the start of the 2024-25 school year. Director Dance shared that Sept. 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and noted that students will be learning about the significance of this day and that schools will be flying the Canadian flag at half-mast. Director Dance noted that Sept. 25 is Rowan’s Law Day, a day to honour Rowan Stringer and raise awareness about concussion safety. Director Dance shared that the board has established student mental health ambassadors in all secondary schools and spoke to the football festival occurring on Sept. 26 at Maple Ridge Secondary School. Director Dance also shared that many students are raising funds for cancer research by participating in the Terry Fox Run hosted by SCDSB schools.
