Bear Creek SS to perform award-winning play at showcase highlighting the best in Ontario
This week, the cast and crew of Bear Creek SS’s production of She Kills Monsters will perform at the National Theatre School DRAMAFEST Provincial Showcase. The school was selected after receiving Outstanding Production awards at the district and regional DRAMAFEST festivals for the first time in the school’s history.
Twenty-six students have been working since October on all aspects of the production, including acting, directing, stage management, costume and makeup design, prop construction, and set, lighting, sound, poster, and program design. Seven members of the cast and crew are also part of the school’s Arts and Culture Specialist High Skills Major program.
The play tells the story of a high school student as she deals with the death of her younger sister through a journey of discovery and adventure in the imaginary world of Dungeon’s and Dragons that was her sister’s refuge.
The production received six of 26 awards at the district festival, including: Award of Merit for Acting, Creative Marquis Design, Stage Management Award, Excellence Award in Costume, Prop, and Set Design, Spirit of the Festival Award, and Outstanding Production.
After considering the district adjudicator’s feedback and adapting parts of the production, the cast and crew moved on to the West Regional Festival along with nine other schools from the western region. Bear Creek SS’s production received the Regional Outstanding Production award, the Adjudicator’s Award for Direction, an Award of Excellence for the lead actress, and an Award of Merit for Best Death.
The provincial showcase, to be held in Gananoque from May 7 to 10, is an opportunity for students to engage with students from schools across the province, watching their productions and participating in workshops and community events led by theatre professionals.
