Junior Debaters' Forum

SCDSB students make their point at Junior Debaters’ Forum
Posted on 03/11/2026

On March 13, students from Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) elementary schools will participate in the annual Junior Debaters’ Forum. Teams of four from each school will participate in three rounds over the course of the day.

In preparation for the event, school staff work with their student teams to learn the basics of debate. Students will learn how to evaluate information, take a position, and support that position with research and relevant background information.

The first two debate topics are provided in advance, while the final topic will be provided at the event. Students will demonstrate formal debating skills as well as research and preparation skills.

Students will debate the following topics:

  • That dogs are better than cats OR that cats are better than dogs
  • That writing by hand is superior to writing with a computer OR that writing with a computer is superior to writing by hand

The Junior Debaters’ Forum will take place at the SCDSB Education Centre from 9:20 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB’s Strategic Priorities in the area of Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
