Earlier this school year, Bradford District HS was announced as the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Farm Credit Canada (FCC) AgriSpirit Fund. The grant supports the school’s Nourish Bradford project, a collaborative effort which aims to address food insecurity in the area while also supporting students by providing valuable practical education and volunteer opportunities.

The Nourish Bradford project provides fresh, free produce to over 100 local seniors, residents of a nearby mental health facility, and students and their families throughout the growing season. Students maintain the garden during the school year and gain volunteer hours during the summer by caring for the garden and harvesting produce.

Funds from the FCC grant supported the updating of the existing school greenhouse, and construction of a new garden shed for the program. Take a look at the updated space in this video!

The FCC AgriSpirit Fund supports projects in communities of less than 150,000 people. Applicants can receive grants for projects that support food recovery or reduction of food waste, support agriculture and food, reduce environmental footprint, or improve accessibility and inclusion.

This project was also supported by the Charitree Foundation, Conquest Steel, the Simcoe County District School Board, TD Friends of the Environment Fund, and private donors.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the areas of Community and Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
