GBDSS Indigenous author visit

Students and staff at Georgian Bay District SS learn about Reconciliation through visit from Indigenous author
Posted on 05/08/2026

In April, Indigenous author David A. Robertson visited Georgian Bay District SS. After Robertson toured the school, he presented to students.

Students learned about his childhood in Manitoba and how he reconnected with his Indigenous roots as a Norway House Cree member. He also discussed the topic of Reconciliation, which he explores through many of his books, including 52 Ways to Reconcile, The Barren Grounds, and The Theory of Crows.

Following the presentation, Robertson answered questions from students and spent time with school staff.

Robertson is a two-time Governor General's Literary Award winner and has won the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award and the Writers' Union of Canada Freedom to Read Award. He has received several other accolades for his work as a writer for children and adults, podcaster, public speaker, and social advocate.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the areas of Well-being, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Community, and Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
