The summer season is almost here, and that means that the practices are over, the competition battles have been contested, and the medals have been awarded in elementary and secondary athletics for Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) student-athletes.
As 2025-26 school sports come to a close, the SCDSB would like to acknowledge the staff, officials, and volunteers who dedicate their time, energy, and passion to making school athletics possible from the Primary grades through to Grade 12. Take a look at how the elementary school experience is enhanced as a result of those efforts.
Elementary highlights
More than 60 school teams competed in the SCDSB elementary rugby season, which included one recreational and seven regional tournaments leading up to the County Finals in late May. Alliston Union PS took home top honours, with Minesing Central PS in second and West Bayfield ES in third.
This spring, thousands of Grade 4 to 8 students participated in track and field activities in physical education classes and at school and regional meets. Every school in the SCDSB provided opportunities for students to develop athletic skills, sportsmanship and confidence through sprint, distance and relay races and field events including long jump, triple jump, and shot put.
In June, the SCDSB hosted the Intermediate Character in Sport Ultimate Frisbee tournament, where Grade 7 and 8 students competed with sportsmanship and fair play at the forefront. Twelve SCDSB elementary schools participated in the event at Maple Grove PS, with another eight schools at Assikinack PS. The spirit of the game was celebrated from start to finish, with each team recognizing two opponents who demonstrated sportsmanship at the end of each game.
To cap off a successful year in elementary sports, the SCDSB hosted the largest 3-pitch softball tournaments ever. With over 70 teams competing in the Intermediate Boys’ and Girls’ tournaments, more than 2,100 Grade 7 and 8 students stepped up to the plate. Teams included those trying the sport for the first time and those with well-developed baseball skills, and all agreed that it was an out of the park experience!
Secondary highlights
SCDSB student-athletes ‘stayed in their lane’ and didn’t ‘get thrown off’ at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Track and Field championships, where they brought home four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
In boys’ baseball, the squad from Collingwood CI dominated on the diamond this season, making it to the final four of the OFSAA championship.
In early June, the OFSAA AAA Boys’ Rugby championship was hosted by Barrie North CI. The sides from Barrie North CI and Eastview SS had strong performances with wins in their first outings, but were both defeated in the quarterfinals.

SCDSB student-athletes have proudly represented their schools and the board throughout the 2025-26 school year, winning 28 GBSAA team championships. This year also saw SCDSB schools continue to shine at a provincial level, with a repeat OFSAA girls’ AAA basketball championship, a girls’ A/AA hockey OFSAA championship, and numerous OFSAA team and individual championships and podium finishes in cross country, golf, hockey, swimming, skiing, tennis, track and field, and wrestling.
