Digital Tools and Accessibility

Digital tools — including programs, websites, apps, and online resources — enrich the learning experience by making tasks more engaging, accessible, and efficient. These tools open up new ways for students to explore ideas, express their thinking, and collaborate with others. Educators use digital tools to support responsive instruction, gather student work, and assess learning in a variety of ways. This includes evaluating knowledge, learning skills, work habits, engagement, and achievement. When thoughtfully integrated, digital tools help all students build essential skills for success in a digital world.

All SCDSB students are provided with digital accounts to support their learning. These accounts include access to both Office 365 for Education and Google Workspace for Education, which offer tools for communication, collaboration, and productivity. Students log in using a board-assigned email address in the format: [username]@scdsb.on.ca.

These core platforms serve as the foundation for many classroom activities, but educators may also use other approved digital tools to enhance learning. These tools are selected to align with curriculum goals, support student needs, and protect student privacy.

Based on the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), the use of digital tools by students requires consent from parents/guardians prior to use. The majority of digital tools used in schools are covered by the Informed Notice Statement that is included in the Acknowledgement and Permissions that are shared with parents/guardians through SchoolCash Online in September of every year. If you do not currently have an account, please visit the SchoolCash Online page to learn more.

Printed copies of the acknowledgement form are also available from the school office. For other digital tools that require explicit consent, parents/guardians will receive a consent form from the classroom educator.

Digital tools are also used by SCDSB staff to manage data securely and meet reporting requirements, in alignment with privacy legislation. For more information on MFIPPA please refer to the Access and Privacy page.
