Virtual Learning Environments

A virtual learning environment (VLE) is a design space for teaching and learning. VLEs add value to a child’s learning experience by extending the physical classroom in a digital way. VLEs allow educators to share learning materials, assignments, collaboration spaces, and provide individual feedback to students.

The SCDSB supports technology-enabled learning environments that enhance student achievement and foster the development of 21st-century competencies (transferable skills). Educators are encouraged to leverage Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) as one of the tools to support student learning. When used effectively, VLEs can provide students with meaningful opportunities to build transferable skills that are essential for their future success, including:

  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Engage in interactive activities, simulations, and problem-solving tasks to enhance analytical thinking, adaptability, and real-world problem-solving skills.
  • Innovation and Creativity: VLEs encourage creativity through multimedia presentations, digital projects, and talent showcases, fostering innovative thinking and digital content creation.
  • Self-Directed Learning: VLEs empower students to control their pace, review material, and develop time-management, reflection, independence, and lifelong learning skills.
  • Collaboration: VLEs offer tools for peer collaboration, promoting effective communication and preparing students for remote work.
  • Global Citizenship and Sustainability: VLEs connect students with diverse peers, fostering cross-cultural understanding and awareness.
  • Digital Literacy: VLEs teach navigation, critical evaluation, and responsible use of digital resources.

By using VLEs, educators can make learning more engaging and relevant, promote opportunities for communication and collaboration, provide personalized material and support, assess student understanding, and engage thoughtfully throughout the learning process with students.

The VLEs utilized and supported in the SCDSB are safe, secure, and protect student privacy and personal information as required by the Municipal Freedom of Information and Privacy Act. Students in the SCDSB will use either Google Classroom or Brightspace by D2L.
