Character recognition 2026

SCDSB celebrates students, staff, and volunteers at annual character recognition event
Posted on 06/01/2026

In the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB), character education is foundational to our schools and workplaces. The board’s values are reflected in character attributes that were identified through consultation with students, parents/guardians, community leaders, and organizations, and they reflect what SCDSB communities consider important.

Each year, the SCDSB hosts a Character Recognition Awards Evening, where students, staff, and volunteers who demonstrate good character in their daily lives are recognized and celebrated.

This year, over 105 individuals were selected from 1,079 nominations to be recognized at the May 28 event. Nominations were received from every school and worksite in the SCDSB.

Nominees and their friends and families enjoyed musical performances by a quintet from Bear Creek SS and the Ferndale Woods ES glee club as well as the opportunity to meet peers and colleagues from across the SCDSB. Individuals selected to be recognized at the awards evening receive a character recognition certificate and a book titled I Promise by LeBron James. All nominees will receive a character recognition certificate.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the areas of Well-being, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Community, and Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
