December sports round-up

Sports round-up: Basketball, cross country, and golf OFSAA championships cap off a successful fall season for SBDSB schools
Posted on 12/02/2024

Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools have a long-standing tradition of excellence in athletics. Student-athletes compete in the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) during the regular season and represent the SCDSB and their schools in the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) and Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships.

Recent highlights
In senior girls’ basketball, the Maple Ridge SS Ravens went 36-2 for the season and made a full-court press at the OFSAA AAA championship, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to go undefeated and beat the top-ranked team in the province 46-42 to bring home the title.

At the OFSAA Cross Country Championship in early November, SCDSB athletes outpaced the competition, with Collingwood CI bringing home first-place finishes in the overall combined team, overall girls’ team, and senior girls’ team. The Collingwood CI overall boys’ team also finished second. In individual results, Alistair W. from Collingwood CI finished third, while Sofia C. and Van C. from Maple Ridge SS both finished fifth in their races.

The SCDSB also sent golfers to the OFSAA Golf Championship, where Paige S. from Maple Ridge SS put on an ‘un-fore-gettable’ show and finished first overall in the high school division.

The Nottawasaga Pines SS boys’ volleyball team represented the SCDSB and GBSSA at the OFSAA AA championships and served up a fourth-place finish.

This fall, rugby sevens made its debut as an official SCAA sport. Teams from across the SCDSB tackled this new opportunity in the junior and senior boys’ and girls’ divisions. The first-ever SCAA rugby sevens champions are:
