Each year, students from across the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) and around the world participate in the online Caribou Math Contest. In May, Guthrie PS Grade 2 student Graydon Knapp placed first overall out of 2,946 participants, and Stayner CI Grade 8 student Jack Stormes placed first overall out of 10,344 participants.

Graydon participated in the contest along with 16 other students from Guthrie PS, while Jack chose to participate on his own.

“It was really great to see Graydon's perseverance with some of the questions, where he was almost ready to give up when he found the solution. He didn't rush through the questions and took his time to think and solve them,” said Mrs. Therrien, teacher at Guthrie PS. “We are so proud of Graydon and all of the other students who participated in the contest!”

The Caribou Math Contest is an online math resource and competition intended to make math fun, while also fostering a love of mathematics by motivating students to keep learning and not give up.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the area of Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
