Beginning in April, social and recreational programs will be offered for Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students with a developmental profile consistent with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The programs will be offered virtually and in person, and will focus on using recreation, problem solving, coding, music, and play skills to support social skills development.

Children's Friendship Training
An evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated children with a developmental profile consistent with ASD, who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. This program will run virtually over a nine-week period.

Music Social Skills Program
A music-based program designed to improve emotional regulation and social skills of children with a developmental profile consistent with ASD by focusing on singing, dancing, and playing instruments in a group setting. This program will run in person over a nine-week period.

Play Ball Kidz Recreation Program
A multi-component recreation program designed to improve the gross motor skills and social skills of children with a developmental profile consistent with ASD. This program will run in person and virtually over a 10-week period.

Coding and Robotics Social Skills Program
A coding and robotics themed program designed to improve computing, problem-solving, and social skills of children with a developmental profile consistent with ASD by focusing on following instructions, creativity, and conversational skills. This program will run online over a five-week period.

Parents/guardians are an important part of the programs and may be required to attend the programs. Parents/guardians will receive resources and support to help children develop and practice new skills at home and at school.

Limited spaces are available. Complete the initial application form on the SCDSB website at scdsb.on.ca/inclusiverecreationprograms. Applications for the Coding and Robotics Club Program close by April 7. Applications for all other programs close by April 13. This does not guarantee enrolment into the program. You may be contacted for an initial telephone interview or virtual screening session to assess if the program is appropriate for your child.
