SCDSB Update 1 – August 31, 2022

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, August 31, 2022. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Statement from Chair Jodi Lloyd

Chair Lloyd acknowledged that some of the victims of the recent tragedy that took the lives of six young adults in Barrie were former SCDSB students. She noted that the thoughts of the Board of Trustees and SCDSB staff are with all those impacted by this situation and that supports are being provided at our schools as needed.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, August 31, 2022:

  1. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-a, School Administrator Appointments, dated August 31, 2022.

 D-2-a Notice of Motion from the June 15, 2022 Board Meeting    
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That Simcoe County District School Board Policy 2199 - Flag Protocol, be updated to include principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, and that a copy of the revised policy be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval at the regular meeting of the Board on September 28, 2022.

 D-4-a Equity Advisory Committee
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the Simcoe County District School Board Equity Advisory Committee Terms of Reference, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-4-a, Proposed Simcoe County District School Board Equity Advisory Committee Terms of Reference, dated August 31, 2022.

 D-5-a Election Compliance Audit Committee
The Board approved the following motion:

  1.  That the Board approve an Election Compliance Audit Committee for the 2022 election term, consisting of the individuals, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Election Compliance Audit Committee, dated August 31, 2022.

 D-5-b Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointment:
The Board approved the following motion:

  1.  That the Board appoint to the SCDSB SEAC, effective September 1, 2022, Kristen Baumann as the SEAC member for the Children’s Treatment Network, as set out in Report No. D-5-b, Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointment, dated August 31, 2022.

 D-5-c New Policy 3135 – Human Rights and Equity
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the adoption of Policy 3135 – Human Rights and Equity, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-c, New Policy 3135 – Human Rights and Equity, dated August 31, 2022.

D-7-a Student Re-engagement

Dawn Stephens, Associate Director, provided a report detailing how re-engagement funding was utilized to support students who may have become disengaged during the 2020-2021 school year. Associate Director Stephens highlighted the number of students who achieved their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and obtained secondary school credits through the SCDSB re-engagement strategy.

Reports/Update from Staff
John Dance, Director of Education, thanked all SCDSB staff for their contributions in preparing for schools to open to students on September 6. Director Dance noted that it is the expectation of the Ministry of Education that schools reopen in a normal fashion. Director Dance provided additional updates from the Ministry of Education and highlighted the SCDSB priorities for the upcoming school year. 

Brian Jeffs, Superintendent of Human Resource Services, provided an update with respect to union contracts and negotiations.
