In April, elementary and secondary students from across Simcoe County represented their schools at the Simcoe County Regional Science and Technology Fair (SCRSTF), an annual event celebrating excellence in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Six projects from students in Grades 7 to 12 were selected to move forward to represent Simcoe County at the Canada-Wide Science Fair from May 31 to June 7. The following Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students are the members of Team Simcoe at this year’s national fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick:

  • Aaryav S. - Cookstown Central PS, AI Waste Sorter
  • Annabel W. - Georgian Bay District HS, Pollution in the Pond: The Heavy Metal Crisis
  • Anne B. - Cookstown Central PS, The Road to a Greener Future: Exploring the Thermal Conductivity of Graphene Nanoparticles in Asphalt
  • Fatima A. - Cundles Heights PS, CardioCall: An Oxygenated Response
  • Katriina A. and Madison R. - Elmvale District HS, How Does Colour Impact Our Sense Perception
  • Solomon K. - Bear Creek SS, Mitigating stress using combined vagal stimulation and traditional therapy

This year’s regional fair included 198 projects, with 130 of those coming from students at 23 SCDSB schools, separated into five categories: Animal and Plant Sciences, Computer Science and Engineering, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Human and Health Sciences, and Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

Projects are recognized with awards in divisional and special award categories. In the divisional awards categories, students from SCDSB schools received:

  • 9 honourable mentions
  • 15 bronze medals
  • 15 silver medals
  • 9 gold medals

SCDSB students were also recognized with 29 special awards, which are sponsored by community organizations and other SCRSTF partners.
