Sports round-up: OFSAA repeat caps off successful fall season for SCDSB student-athletes
Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools have a long-standing tradition of excellence in athletics. Elementary student-athletes take part in interschool sports with other SCDSB schools enroute to area and county championships. Secondary student-athletes compete in the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) during the regular season and represent the SCDSB and their schools in the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) and Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships.
Recent highlights
Elementary
In late October, over 1,700 student-athletes from Grades 4 to 8 ‘went the distance’ at the SCDSB’s county cross country meet. The runners showed grit, athleticism, and commitment as they raced on a challenging course over the hills and through the woods at Mount St. Louis Moonstone.
Many SCDSB schools engaged in flag football playing in various regional tournaments across the county through mid-October. The County Flag Football final tournament was held on Oct. 27 at the Barrie Sports Complex, where Minesing Central PS defeated Algonquin Ridge PS in the final game.

At the Girls’ OFSAA AAA Basketball Championship, the Maple Ridge Ravens won their way to back-to-back gold, going undefeated at OFSAA for the second year in a row to bring the banner back to Maple Ridge SS. The Collingwood CI novice girls placed second overall, while their overall boys’ and senior girls’ teams stood on the podium in third place. In individual results, Collingwood CI runners Alistair W. and Colton R. were on top of the podium in the junior boys’ 5K and ambulatory races, respectively, and Henry J. from Collingwood CI placed fifth.
The SCDSB was pleased to host the Boys’ OFSAA AA Volleyball Championship from Nov. 20 to 22, where schools from across Ontario, including the GBSSA champion Twin Lakes Thunderbirds, ‘served up’ their best efforts in the quest for the title.
