SCDSB students win best of show at provincial competition
The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) sent 41 students from 10 schools to the 2019 Skills Ontario Competition held in Toronto from May 6 to 8. SCDSB competitors won medals in nine categories: three gold, five silver and one bronze. In addition, the SCDSB won the School Board Award of Distinction, presented to the school board that places in the top ten in the most contests.
The event promotes skilled trade and technology careers to youth by hosting skilled trades competitions for over 2,400 students from across Ontario in more than 67 contest areas. Participating students showcase their talents and compete for the title of best in their trade amongst the province’s most skilled youth.
Medals were awarded to:
- Daniel Clements from Innisdale Secondary School – Gold in Computer Aided Manufacturing
- Jessica St. Amand and Olivia Kennedy from Innisdale Secondary School – Gold in 2D Character Computer Animatio
- Matthew Cameron from Barrie North Collegiate Institute – Gold in Electrical Installations
- Zacchary Dempsey-Plante from Collingwood Collegiate Institute – Silver in Coding
- Summer Gough from Banting Memorial High School – Silver in Hairstyling
- Matt Jack from Barrie North Collegiate Institute – Silver in Auto Collison Repair
- Avery Mooring from Bear Creek Secondary School – Silver in Fashion Design
- Aiden McKenzie, Jim Palmer, Matthew Beals and Maguire Blackmere from Stayner Collegiate Institute – Silver in Home and Team Building
- Roland Cseh from Nantyr Shores Secondary School – Bronze in Restaurant Service
Cameron, St. Amand and Kennedy will represent the province of Ontario at the national competition held in Halifax at the end of May.
“Our students’ achievements at Skills Ontario are representative of their time, hard work and dedication, as well as that of the staff who have supported them throughout this process,” says Steve Blake, Director of Education. “Our board has made a clear commitment to the promotion of skilled trades and apprenticeships, and that is evident in the success of our students.”
For the first time, the SCDSB also had 18 elementary school students compete in five different contests in the elementary component of the competition.
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program provide significant support to the Skills Ontario Competition.
