After school program opportunities available this spring for students with ASDs

Social and recreational programs will be offered this spring for Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The programs will be offered at elementary schools in Barrie, Innisfil, Midland and Wasaga Beach, and will focus on using recreation, music and play skills to support social skills development.

Children's Friendship Training
A nine-week, evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated children ages 6 to 12 diagnosed with a Level 1 or Level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder, who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. This program will be offered at Ferndale Woods Elementary School in Barrie.

Music Social Skills Program
A ten-week, multi-component music platform designed to improve emotional understanding and social skills of 5 to 9-year-old children diagnosed with a Level 1 or Level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder. This program will be offered at Mundy’s Bay Public School in Midland.

Play Ball Kidz Recreation Program
A nine-week, multi-component recreation program designed to improve the gross motor skills and social skills of 5 to 12 year old children diagnosed with a Level 1 or Level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder. This program will be offered at Birchview Dunes Elementary School in Wasaga Beach, Johnson Street Public School in Barrie and Alcona Glen Elementary School in Innisfil.

Parents and schools are an important part of the programs and will receive resources and support to help the children develop and practice new skills at home and at school.

Limited spaces are available. Complete the initial application form linked in the program flyer. This does not guarantee enrolment into the program. You may be contacted for an initial telephone interview to assess if the program is appropriate for your child.
