SCDSB Update 13 – April 22, 2020

In response to COVID-19, the Simcoe County District School Board Education Centre is currently closed. The April 22 Board Meeting was held electronically via teleconference. The recorded version of the meeting is available at www.scdsb.on.ca

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, April 22, 2020. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee Maya Aldis provided an update on behalf of the student trustees. Student Trustee Aldis noted that the student trustees are working towards completion of their student trustee portfolios. Maya also shared that they are connecting virtually with the incoming 2020-2021 student trustees to provide guidance and support as they prepare for their role.

Chairperson Lloyd accepted the delegation for information.

 

 D-5-a Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) – Director and Alternate Director for the 2020-2021 School Year
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board appoint Trustee Jodi Lloyd as the representative to serve as a director on the OPSBA Board of Directors, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) – Director and Alternate Director for the 2020-2021 School Year, dated April 22, 2020.
  2. That the Board appoint Trustee Tanya Snell as the representative to serve as alternate director on the OPSBA Board of Directors, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) – Director and Alternate Director for the 2020-2021 School Year, dated April 22, 2020.

 D-7 Staff Reports
Steve Blake, Director of Education, acknowledged the support of the Board during this complex, ever-changing and unprecedented school closure period. 

Director Blake recognized the quality of work that has been created and implemented by board staff within such a short period, and noted that staff continue to build upon and develop plans daily.  Director Blake recognized the positive comments, emails, and social media posts received from our school communities. 
 

Chris Samis, Superintendent of Program and Special Education, provided an overview of the SCDSB’s Continuity of Learning Plan and the various forms of distance learning that are occurring during the school closure period. Superintendent Samis acknowledged that changes to daily routines and learning environments can cause stress for some students and families, and shared that the board has developed mental health and well-being resources that are available on the SCDSB public website. Dawn Stephens, Superintendent of Education, provided an update on the technology and resources that have been distributed to students.

Brian Jeffs, Superintendent of Business & Facility Services, provided an update on maintenance and construction projects. Superintendent Jeffs provided information with regards to the 13 contracts that were awarded in April within the approved budget. Superintendent Jeffs shared that the report regarding increases to Education Development Charges has been postponed until the board can resume regular operations.
