SCDSB Update 3 – October 28, 2020

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, October 28, 2020. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee Zainab Jafri provided highlights from the Student Senate meeting, which took place virtually on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. Student Trustee Jafri shared that 16 students attended the meeting and participated in discussions regarding stereotypes, led by Irfan Toor, Principal of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. 

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, October 28, 2020:

  1. That the Board approve the G.A. Wright Athletic Field Joint Use Agreement with the Town of New Tecumseth presented in APPENDIX A, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-1, G.A. Wright Athletic Field Joint Use Agreement – Town of New Tecumseth, dated October 7, 2020.
  2. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School Administrator Appointments, dated October 14, 2020.

D-5-a The International Student Program (ISP) Admission Plan to Receive Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the Simcoe County District School Board’s attestation of readiness to welcome international students during the COVID-19 pandemic as outlined in Report No. D-5-a, The International Student Program (ISP) Admission Plan to Receive Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic, dated October 28, 2020.

D-5-b Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board appoint Trustee Peter Beacock to serve as the designated voting member for the November 26, 2020, SCSTC AGM, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-b, Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member, dated October 28, 2020.
  2. That the Board appoint Chairperson Jodi Lloyd to serve as the designated alternate voting member for the November 26, 2020, SCSTC AGM, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-b, Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member, dated October 28, 2020.

Staff Reports

D-7-a Capital Priorities Funding
Brian Jeffs, Superintendent of Business and Facility Services, provided an update with regards to capital priorities funding. Superintendent Jeffs shared that the Ministry of Education approved capital funding for 190 new elementary student spaces at Lake Simcoe Public School, along with two new child care rooms, for an estimated construction value of $5.4 million.

D-7-b Focusing On Our Work
Steve Blake, Director of Education, provided an update with regards to school board operations and noted that daily routines related to COVID-19 protocols have been established. Director Blake shared that program delivery, with a continued focus on equity, diversity and inclusion, well-being and mental health, remain a focus for our work as we move forward with important priorities such as the New Teacher Induction Program, mentoring, music and math. 

Questions and Proposals from Trustees
Trustee O’Brien shared that Kim Posluns, designated early childhood educator from Maple Grove Public School, received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

Trustee Armstrong shared that Mark Gaynik, teacher at Nantyr Shores Secondary School, received a Certificate of Achievement as part of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Chairperson Lloyd shared that she visited Twin Lakes Secondary School with Director Blake and Superintendent of Education Douglas Paul to congratulate Dianne Purdy, Senior Administrative Support Secondary, for her 45 years of service with the SCDSB. 

Reports/Updates from Staff
Superintendent Jeffs provided an update regarding the athletic field at Georgian Bay District Secondary School and shared that the field will be accessible for the 2021-2022 school year. 

Superintendent Jeffs provided an update with regards to the south Barrie secondary school and noted that construction on the school is progressing well, with a goal to open in the 2021-2022 school year.
