SCDSB Update 8 – January 27, 2021

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, January 27, 2021. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee Jafri shared that the student trustee sub-committee focused on equity, diversity and inclusion has been formally renamed the SCDSB Think Tank. Student Trustee Jafri noted that Barbara Thompson, founder of the Black Youth Helpline, will be the guest speaker at the SCDSB Think Tank meeting in February. 

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendation taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, November 25, 2020:

  1. That the Board approve the appointment of Charlene Scime as Supervisory Officer – Superintendent of Education K-12, effective February 4, 2021, according to the terms of a personal services contract between Charlene Scime and the board, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-c, Appointment of Supervisory Officers – Superintendents of Education K-12, dated November 25, 2020.

    That the Board ratify the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, January 27, 2021:

    2. That the Board ratify the collective agreement reached with the Simcoe County Elementary Designated Early Childhood Educators Bargaining Unit for the term of September 1, 2019, to August 31, 2022, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-a, Board Ratification of the Simcoe County Elementary Designated Early Childhood Educators (DECE) and Its Local Agreement, dated January 27, 2021.

    3. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-b, School Administrator Appointments, dated January 27, 2021.

    Kelly Lalonde from Nottawasaga Pines S.S. (VP) to Nottawasaga Pines S.S. (Acting)

    Secondary Vice-principal Appointment effective February 4, 2021
    Ashley Hillier from Bradford District H.S. (Teacher) to Nottawasaga Pines S.S. (Acting)

    Trustees received the following transfers:

    Secondary Principal Transfers effective February 4, 2021
    Nancy Arnold-Sallows from Nottawasaga Pines S.S. to Banting Memorial H.S.
    Alberto Bernardi from Banting Memorial H.S. to Student Achievement 7-12
    Curt Davidson from Special Education to Collingwood C.I.

D-4-a Program 
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve revisions to Policy 4240 – Safe, Inclusive and Accepting Schools, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. PRO-D-1, Revisions to Policy 4240 – Safe, Inclusive and Accepting Schools, dated January 13, 2021.
  2. That the Board approve revisions to Policy 4250 – Progressive Discipline and Promoting Positive Student Behaviour, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. PRO-D-2, Revisions to Policy 4250 – Progressive Discipline and Promoting Positive Student Behaviour, dated January 13, 2021.

D-4-b FNEAC 
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve that the First Nations Education Advisory Committee expand its membership to include representation from local Indigenous stakeholder agencies, as set out in report number D-4-b, Report of the First Nations Education Advisory Committee, dated January 7, 2021.
  2. That the Board approve that the First Nations Education Advisory Committee revise the name to Indigenous Education Advisory Committee to reflect this change in membership, as set out in report number D-4-b, Report of the First Nations Education Advisory Committee, dated January 7, 2021.

D-5-a Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointment
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board appoint to the SCDSB SEAC, effective February 1, 2021, Tamara Hannon as the SEAC member for Empower Simcoe, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointment, dated January 27, 2021.

Reports/Update from Staff
Steve Blake, Director of Education, provided an update with regards to the status of programming during the school closure period. Director Blake shared a video highlighting examples of the creative and innovative teaching occurring within SCDSB remote learning classrooms.

Douglas Paul, Superintendent of Education, provided an update regarding requests for changes in learning modes for elementary students. Superintendent Paul shared that school staff will be informing parents/guardians next week with regards to the status of their requests, and that changes in learning modes will occur at the term transition on February 17.
