SCDSB Update 9 – February 24, 2021
This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Student Trustees

Student Trustee Monahan provided an update on behalf of the student trustees. Student Trustee Monahan spoke about the student trustee elections that took place virtually via Zoom on February 23, 2021. Student Trustee Monahan shared that 12 students were nominated by their schools to present at the meeting. The elected student trustees for the 2021-2022 term are Abigale Goneau from Georgian Bay District Secondary School, Nyla Nasir from Bear Creek Secondary School and Oreofeoluwa Oluwatayo from Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School. The incoming student trustees for the 2021-2022 school year will be introduced at the March 24, 2021 Board Meeting.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, February 24, 2021:

  1. That the Board approve the School/System Administrator Eligibility List as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School/System Administrator Eligibility List – February 2021, dated February 10, 2021.
  2. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-a, School Administrator Appointments, dated February 24, 2021.

    Elementary Principal Appointment effective March 1, 2021
    Eile Short from Fred C. Cook E.S. (VP) to Ernest Cumberland E.S. (Acting)

    Elementary Vice-principal Appointment effective March 1, 2021
    Eunice Martinez from External to Fred C. Cook E.S.

  3. Trustees received the following transfer:

    Elementary Principal Transfer effective March 1, 2021
    Greg Blakeley from Ernest Cumberland E.S. to Special Education

D-4-a Business and Facilities
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve the schools closed to new out-of-attendance-area students for the 2021-2022 school year, as set out in Report No. BF-D-1, 2021-2022 Capital Plan, dated February 3, 2021.
  2. That the Board approve the pursuit of facility partnership opportunities for the capital projects under consideration, as set out in Report No. BF-D-1, 2021-2022 Capital Plan, dated February 3, 2021.
  3. That the Board approve the Capital Plan, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. BF-D-1, 2021-2022 Capital Plan, dated February 3, 2021.

D-4-b Program
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve revisions to Policy 4116 – French as a Second Language: French Immersion, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. PRO-D-1, Revisions to Policy 4116 – French as a Second Language: French Immersion, dated February 10, 2021.

D-5-a Schedule of April 2021 Program and Human Resources Standing Committee Meetings
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the rescheduling of the April Program and Human Resources Standing Committee meetings from April 14, 2021 to April 21, 2021, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Schedule of April 2021 Program and Human Resources Standing Committee Meetings, dated February 24, 2021.

Reports/Updates from Staff
Dawn Stephens, Superintendent of Program 7-12 and Information Technology, provided an update with regards to asymptomatic testing for students and school staff. Superintendent Stephens noted that as part of the updated health and safety measures announced by the Ministry of Education, school boards are required to conduct asymptomatic COVID-19 testing in at least five percent of schools each week. Superintendent Stephens shared that asymptomatic testing will be offered by LifeLabs and will begin with schools in the Bradford area on March 4, 2021. Superintendent Stephens noted that information about testing clinics will be shared directly with families, and will be advertised on the SCDSB website and social media channels.
