SCDSB Update 13 – June 16, 2021

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, June 16, 2021. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Student Trustee Presentation
Trustee Beacock thanked the outgoing student trustees for their contributions as representatives of students from across the SCDSB. Trustee Beacock acknowledged the efforts of the student trustees in establishing the student-led Equity Think Tank. Trustee Beacock congratulated the student trustees and wished them well as they continue with their educational journeys.

Delegations

  1. Gillian Scobie re: Police Free Schools
    Chairperson Lloyd accepted the delegation for information.
  2. Amber Beckett and CJ Palmer re: School Resource Officer (SRO) Program
    Chairperson Lloyd accepted the delegation for information.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, June 16, 2021:

  1. That the Board approve the school administrator appointment as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School Administrator Appointment, dated June 9, 2021.

    Secondary Vice-principal appointment effective August 26, 2021
    Tracey Galbraith from External to Bradford District H.S.

  2. That the Board accept with best wishes and regret the notice of resignation for retirement purposes from Steve Blake, Director of Education, effective July 31, 2021, as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-2, Notice of Resignation for Retirement – Director.
  3. That the Board approve the appointment of Associate Director John Dance as the Interim Director, effective August 1, 2021, until such time as a new director has assumed the position of Director of Education for the Simcoe County District School Board.
  4. That the Board approve a confidential personnel matter.

D-2-a Notice of Motion from the June 16, 2021 Board Meeting   
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board of Trustees be provided with a written report from the student trustees semi-annually regarding the progress of the student-led Equity Think Tank.

D-4-a Business and Facilities
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy 3250 – Volunteers in Schools, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. BF-D-1, Revisions to Policy 3250 – Volunteers in Schools, dated June 2, 2021.
  2. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy 3255 – Criminal Background Checks - Non-employees, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. BF-D-2, Revisions to Policy 3255 – Criminal Background Checks - Non-employees, dated June 2, 2021.
  3. That the Board approve the 2021-2022 Proposed Budget, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. BF-D-3, 2021-2022 Proposed Budget, dated June 2, 2021.

D-5-a Appointment of Student Trustee Mentor
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board appoint Trustee Peter Beacock to serve as the student trustee mentor from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Appointment of Student Trustee Mentor, dated June 16, 2021.

Questions and Proposal from Trustees
Trustee Beacock extended well wishes to Douglas Paul, Superintendent of Education, on his upcoming retirement and thanked him on behalf of the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium and the Board of Trustees for his 32 years of service at the SCDSB.

Trustee Snell congratulated Stuart Finlayson, Superintendent of Education, on his upcoming retirement on behalf of the members of the Parent Involvement Committee. Chair Lloyd thanked Superintendent Finlayson for his leadership with the First Nations Education Advisory Committee and wished him well in his retirement on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

Chair Lloyd, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, congratulated Steve Blake, Director of Education, on his upcoming retirement after 34 years in education. Chair Lloyd acknowledged Director Blake for his steadfast leadership, dedication and commitment to the students, staff and entire SCDSB community. Chair Lloyd thanked Director Blake for his many contributions as Director of Education including the development of the SCDSB Strategic Priorities, the establishment of a strong, respectful working relationship with the Board of Trustees and strength in leadership during the challenges of the past year. 

Reports/Update from Staff
Stuart Finlayson, Superintendent of Education, provided an update regarding the Parent Involvement Committee Connections and Connections 2.0 events which took place virtually during the 2020-2021 school year. Superintendent Finlayson noted that feedback gathered from participants was positive and will be helpful in planning future events for school council members.
