Hello Kindergarten families!
During the first years of life, caregivers, including family members, child care providers, and educators, are central to a child’s development. Young children are dependent upon their caregivers to create a safe, nurturing, and appropriately stimulating environment so they can learn about the world around them. Children can only learn to self-regulate when they have the repeated experience of being co-regulated by caring adults. This does not mean trying to control children’s feelings or telling them to calm down. Co-regulation means helping them feel calm and safe. Co-regulation is especially important with children, and in fact, we co-regulate with others throughout our lives.
The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie has a resourceful YouTube channel with many amazing videos. Check out this short video that discusses co-regulation.
Guided by the Simcoe County District School Board’s (SCDSB) mission and vision statements and our Strategic Priorities, our Indigenous education department supports the achievement and sense of belonging of self-identified First Nation, Métis and Inuit students. They do this through direct support to students, while also providing opportunities for all SCDSB students and staff to develop a greater understanding of the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in our communities and across Canada. This can include activities such as circles and the use of traditional medicines in all SCDSB buildings. To familiarize your family with Indigenous culture, consider visiting an EarlyON location and participate in their Indigenous EarlyON programming.
