SCDSB Update 4 – November 28, 2018

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, November 28, 2018. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from Student Trustees
Student Trustee Victoria McMahon provided an update from Student Senate. Victoria shared that attendance at the Student Senate meeting has doubled over last month. She also shared that Morgane Dunot, Project Coordinator of the Local Immigration Partnership in the County of Simcoe, attended the meeting and spoke about the “Stand Up” and #itstarts campaign that addresses racism and discrimination towards newcomers in the area.

Presentation to Out-going Trustees 
The Board acknowledged the out-going trustees for their service and dedication to the SCDSB. Out-going trustees include – Kathleen Aikins, Jennifer Cameron, Donna Da Silva, Suzanne Ley, Krista Mayne, Brandy Rafeek and Daniel Shilling.  

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, November 28, 2018:

  1. That the Board approve to repeal the Notice of Application for Approval to Expropriate Land for the land described, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-1, Bradford North Expropriation Update, dated November 7, 2018.
  2. That the Board approve the School/System Administrator Eligibility List as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School/System Administrator Eligibility List - November 2018, dated November 14, 2018.

D-4-a Business and Facilities
The Board approved the following motions: 

  1. That the Board approve the name Simcoe Shores Secondary School as the name to replace the current Simcoe Alternative Secondary School effective November 29, 2018, as set out in Report No. BF-D-1, Renaming of the Simcoe Alternative Secondary School, dated November 7, 2018.
  2. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2345 – Community Planning and Partnerships, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. BF-D-2, Revisions to Policy No. 2345 – Community Planning and Partnerships, dated November 7, 2018.

D-4-b Program Standing
The Board approved the following motion: 

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 4440 – Naming of Schools, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. PRO-D-1, Revisions to Policy No. 4440 – Naming of Schools, dated November 14, 2018.

D-4-c Human Resources
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2185 - Community, Student and Employee Recognition, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. HR-D-1, Revisions to Policy No. 2185 - Community, Student and Employee Recognition, dated November 14, 2018.
  2. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2195 - Ethics and Integrity Reporting (Whistleblower), as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. HR-D-2, Revisions to Policy No. 2195 - Ethics and Integrity Reporting (Whistleblower), dated November 14, 2018.

D-5-a Parent Involvement Committee – Community Representative
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board appoint to the SCDSB PIC, effective December 1, 2018, Nadia Fitzgerald, Joan Kennedy, and Brandy Rafeek as Community Representatives on the PIC, as set out in Report No D-5-a, Parent involvement Committee – Community Representation, dated November 28, 2018.

D-5-b Revisions to Policy No. 2140 – Electronic Meetings 
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2140 – Electronic Meetings, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. D-5-b, Revisions to Policy No. 2140 – Electronic Meetings, dated November 28, 2018.

D-5-c Revisions to Policy No. 2199 – Flag Protocol
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2199 – Flag Protocol, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. D-5-c, Revisions to Policy No. 2199 – Flag Protocol, dated November 28, 2018.

Reports/Updates from Staff
Director Blake reported that the runner-up for the public school board trustee in the October Municipal Election for Barrie Wards 1, 2 and 3 has requested a recount of the ballots. 

Questions and Proposals from Trustees 
Trustee Rafeek provided a report on the People for Education conference that she recently attended.

Chair Beacock highlighted the accomplishments of the Board of Trustees during their four-year term with the Board.
