SCDSB Update 6 – December 19, 2018

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from Student Trustees
Student Trustee Julia Felgner provided highlights from Student Senate. She shared that the Senate would be exploring ways to improve attendance at meetings in the new year. She also shared that Irfan Toor, Principal of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, returned to deliver part two of the equity workshop where they discussed what inclusivity looks, sounds and feels like within our schools.

Presentation to Out-going Chairperson
Trustee Peter Beacock was recognized and thanked for his work and dedication as Board Chairperson for the past five years. Chairperson Lloyd spoke to the high level of engagement that past Chairperson Beacock had with the students and school communities, noting the outstanding commitment he brought to the role.

D-5-a Appointments to the Special Education Advisory Committee January 2019 – December 2022

The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board appoint to the SCDSB SEAC, effective January 2019, members and alternates, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Appointments to the Special Education Advisory Committee, January 2019-December 2022, dated December 19, 2018.

D-5-b Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) – Director and Alternate Director for the 2018-2019 School Year

The Board approved the following motions: 

  1. That the Board appoint Chairperson Lloyd as the representative to serve as a director on the OPSBA Board of Directors, as set out in Report No. D-5-b, Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) – Director and Alternate Director for the 2018-2019 School Year, dated December 19, 2018. 
  2. That the Board appoint Trustee Snell to serve as an alternate director on the OPSBA Board of Directors, as set out in Report No. D-5-b, Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) – Director and Alternate Director for the 2018-2019 School Year, dated December 19, 2018.

D-5-c Appointment of Student Trustee Mentor
The Board approved the following motion: 

  1. That the Board appoint Trustee Beacock to serve as the student trustee mentor from December 20, 2018 to July 31, 2019, as set out in Report No. D-5-c, Appointment of Student Trustee Mentor, dated December 19, 2018.

D-5-d Trustee Committee Assignments for 2019
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board ratify the recommendations of the Selection Committee, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-d, Trustee Committee Assignments for 2019, dated December 19, 2018.

Reports/Updates from Staff

Superintendent Jeffs provided information with regards to the Education Program – Other (EPO) funding announcement. 

Superintendent Stephens provided an update on the school nutrition programs. 

Questions and Proposals from Trustees 

Chairperson Lloyd brought forward a report from her attendance at the recent OPSBA meeting and reported highlights shared by the Minister of Education.

Trustee Beacock commented on his recent attendance at several events, including concerts at Eastview Secondary School and Huronia Centennial Elementary School, attendance at the Oro Council Meeting where students from Moonstone Public School performed, the Kempenfelt Cup, various holiday lunches and the open house that was held at the Wasaga Beach Learning Centre on Dec. 18. Trustee Beacock also recognized the work of secondary students for attending elementary families of schools to showcase and promote music programs. 

Chairperson Lloyd commented on the recent holiday lunch that she attended at Brechin Public School with Superintendent Paul, and thanked local businesses and parents for their involvement in making the lunch a success. 

Vice-chairperson North commented on the Supervised Alternative Learning (SAL) meetings that have been held recently. He noted that a therapy dog was present at a meeting he attended, and spoke to the positive impact that the therapy dog had on the meeting.
