SCDSB Update 8 – February 27, 2019

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, February 27, 2019. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from Student Trustees
Student Trustee Julia Felgner provided a report from the Student Senate meeting. Julia shared that they had a presentation by Jessica Kukac, Environmental and Energy Systems Coordinator with the SCDSB, who discussed the EcoSchools program and provided advice on environmental advocacy.

Student Trustee Julia Felgner reported on the outcome of the student trustee elections. The successful candidates for the 2019-20 term include:

  • Fouz UI-Mubeen from Orillia Secondary School
  • Mylan Nuguyen from Bear Creek Secondary School
  • Maya Aldis from Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School

D-4-a Program Standing 
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy 4140 - Selection and Approval of Learning Media, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. PRO-D-1, Revisions to Policy 4140 - Selection and Approval of Learning Media, dated February 13, 2019.
  2. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy 4260 - School Food and Beverage, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. PRO-D-2, Revisions to Policy 4260 - School Food and Beverage, dated February 13, 2019.

D-4-b SEAC 
The Board approved the following motion: 

  1. That the Board approve revisions to the Simcoe County District School Board Special Education Advisory Committee Terms of Reference, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-4-b, Report of the Special Education Advisory Committee meeting, dated February 27, 2019.

Questions and Proposals from Trustees 
Superintendent Samis responded to inquiries regarding the Special Education Information Session that was cancelled due to inclement weather on Monday, Feb. 25, 2019. Superintendent Samis indicated that the session would be rescheduled and communication will be shared when the date has been determined. 

Superintendent Samis responded to questions from trustees with regards to autism supports in light of the recent government announcement. Superintendent Samis shared that the SCDSB will be looking at strategies to support students and will be discussing this topic at the upcoming SEAC meeting. 

Chairperson Lloyd noted that it was Pink Shirt Day, an initiative to combat bullying, and commented on her attendance with Director Blake at the official announcement of the 2020 Ontario Winter Games in Orillia.
