SCDSB students to use the spoken word to address social issues at annual poetry slam

Grade 7 and 8 students from schools across the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will take part in the 8th annual Spoken Word Poetry Slam on April 30.

Students present group and individual original spoken word poems about personal topics such as mental health and social justices issues. Awards are given for group, individual and school results.

Acclaimed Canadian spoken word artist Wali Shah will act as an event judge and keynote speaker. Selected as one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 in 2014, Shah is Poet Laureate for the City of Mississauga. He combines social issues, experiences, comedy and his South Asian and Muslim background to bring his work to life.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SCDSB Education Centre, located at 1170 Highway 26 in Midhurst.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB’s Strategic Priorities under the pillars of excellence in teaching and learning, equity, diversity and inclusion and well-being..
