Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF)

The SCDSB offers Grade 12 FSL students an opportunity to challenge the Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF) exam. The learners, with the support of their teacher, will self-select which CEFR level (A2, B1, B2) to challenge. The DELF exam assesses the learner’s French proficiency in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, spoken production and written production.

What is the DELF?

The Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française (DELF) is a diploma issued by the French Ministry for National Education that certifies a learner’s proficiency in French. These evaluations are intended for those whose first language is not French. DELF diplomas are recognized around the world. The results of these exams are valid for life. The DELF Canada Centre reports that approximately 650,000 Canadians have written the exam since 2009. In 2019, DELF examinations were available in 175 countries.

The DELF evaluates language skills in four areas:

  • oral comprehension
  • oral expression
  • written comprehension
  • written expression

Why take the DELF?

  • It measures and certifies your level of language proficiency using an established and internationally recognized tool.
  • It has global currency. It's calibrated to international language standards and is recognized around the world.
  • Proficiency in an additional language is an asset and certified proficiency enhances the value of this asset. A DELF certificate can qualify you for study, work or other opportunities.
  • The DELF B2 meets the language requirement for admission to universities in France and increasingly to French-speaking universities in Canada.

What level should I challenge?

It's important to carefully select the DELF challenge level that most closely demonstrates your proficiency. A good first step is to discuss options with your FSL teachers as they have learned alongside you and can provide important feedback to guide you in making a decision. You may also want to visit the preparation tab on this page to try different tasks at varying levels.

The Destination DELF site provides a clear outline of the success criteria for each level as well as sample videos of students participating in DELF interviews.
