SCDSB Update 4 – October 23, 2019

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, October 23, 2019. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee Fouz Ul-Mubeen reported that the Student Senate meeting held at Orillia Secondary School was well attended. Jessica Kukac, Environmental Systems Coordinator from the SCDSB, and Dr. Ellen Field from Lakehead University provided presentations with a focus on waste reduction, environmental initiatives and access to funding to support school-based environmental projects. 

D-4-a SEAC 
The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve a letter written by the SCDSB SEAC Chairperson and Vice-chairperson to the Minister of Education addressing the impact of the removal of the Local Priorities Funding related to Special Education.

D-5-a Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board appoint Trustee Peter Beacock to serve as the designated voting member for the November 28, 2019, SCSTC AGM, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-a, Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member, dated October 23, 2019. 
  2. That the Board appoint Chairperson Jodi Lloyd to serve as the designated alternate voting member for the November 28, 2019, SCSTC AGM, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-a, Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member, dated October 23, 2019.

Questions and Proposals from Trustees
Trustee O’Brien requested a summary of the annual Connections event, hosted by the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC). Superintendent Finlayson reported on the success of the event, noting that approximately 85 parents were in attendance. Superintendent Finlayson thanked PIC Chair Brandy Rafeek for her leadership, Director Blake for bringing greetings on behalf of the SCDSB and Communications Officer Jamie Campbell for providing information about the SCDSB public website. 

Vice-chair North commented on the success of the Angus Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign, noting that over $10,000 was raised for mental health initiatives at Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School. He thanked the community for their generosity and the franchise for their tremendous support. Student Trustee Maya Aldis added that she assisted with cookie decorating at Tim Hortons with Director Blake and Superintendent Giffen and shared her gratitude for a successful campaign.

Trustee Beacock shared that he attended the Elmvale Fall Fair and was impressed with the level of enthusiasm and involvement of all students. Trustee Beacock also commented on his recent visit to Forest Hill Public School and the opportunity to observe the music program and listen to the impressive senior band and orchestra made up of 25-30 students.

Trustee Snell shared that she toured the elementary schools in her area with Superintendent Giffen. She noted that she learned of many innovative initiatives happening in the schools that align with the Strategic Priorities and was impressed with the level of dedication, pride and compassion shown by school staff and administrators.

Trustee Beitz commented on her experience at the area and county cross country track meets.

Chairperson Lloyd shared that she attended the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit Grand Opening at Georgian Bay District Secondary School, and noted the value of this long-standing positive partnership. Chairperson Lloyd commented on her attendance at the Twin Lakes Secondary School Thunder Stars assembly and how impressed she was by the event and the support students demonstrated for one another. Chairperson Lloyd also shared that she accepted an award from the Indigenous Trustee Council in memory of Trustee Michele Locke and brought the award to the Education Centre to be displayed.
