SCDSB Update 12 – March 25, 2020
In response to COVID-19, the Simcoe County District School Board Education Centre is currently closed to the public. The March 25 Board Meeting was held electronically. The recorded version of the meeting is available at www.scdsb.on.ca.
This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.
Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee Mylan Nguyen provided an update on behalf of the student trustees. Mylan shared that the student trustees met with Grade 7 and 8 students at Elmvale District High School and Stayner Collegiate Institute to make them aware of leadership opportunities and the Student Senate meetings. Mylan indicated that the March 25, 2020 Student Senate meeting was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendation taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, March 25, 2020:
- That the Board approve the School/System Administrator Eligibility List as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School/System Administrator Eligibility List – March 2020, dated March 11, 2020.
D-4-a Program
The Board approved the following motion:
- That the Board approve the submission of the school year calendar for 2020-2021 to the Ministry of Education for approval, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. PRO-D-1, School Year Calendar 2020-2021, dated March 11, 2020.
D-5-a Appointments to the Special Education Advisory Committee
The Board approved the following motion:
- That the Board appoint to the SCDSB SEAC, effective April 1, 2020, members and alternate, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Appointments to the Special Education Advisory Committee, dated March 25, 2020.

Reports/Updates from Staff
Steve Blake, Director of Education, provided a report on the SCDSB’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Director Blake shared that board staff is preparing a Continuity of Learning Plan, should the school closures extend beyond April 5, 2020. Director Blake noted that families have been informed about the Learn at Home portal that provides learning resources for students to access during this two week closure period, and shared that this information, along with other important links to mental health and well-being resources, are available on the SCDSB website at www.scdsb.on.ca/covid-19.
Director Blake shared that the SCDSB, along with many other school boards and municipalities, has installed signage in school playgrounds indicating that playground equipment is not to be used due to COVID-19.
