Mental health the focus at Orillia Secondary School on May 7 with a ‘Brainstorm Revolution’

On May 7, students and staff at Orillia Secondary School (OSS) will recognize Mental Health Awareness Week. They will be joined by Brainstorm Revolution author Heather Down for a dialogue on building resilience and ending stigma related to mental health issues. Down will work with various classes to discuss mental health and well-being, and to discuss the process of writing and publishing a book.

Brainstorm Revolution is an anthology of personal stories, including one from OSS student Zoey Raffay. Students have been studying components of the book in various classes. In the afternoon, dance and drama students will share a performance, inspired by the book, focused on the importance of exercise and the arts for mental health and well-being.

During the lunch hour, students will also be able to gather information about community mental health initiatives and supports from representatives of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, New Path, Canadian Mental Health Association, Orillia Public Library and more.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB’s Strategic Priorities under the pillars of community, well-being and excellence in teaching and learning.
