About the HREO

The SCDSB Human Rights and Equity Office (HREO) is a safe and confidential space to identify matters related to discrimination, harassment and human rights violations. Our goal is to create and maintain a safe, caring and inclusive learning and working environment by promoting and protecting the human rights of SCDSB students, families, staff and communities. We work towards this goal by:

  • Building and maintaining a culture of respect and dignity for human rights. This includes supporting the SCDSB in identifying and addressing systemic barriers and inequitable or discriminatory practices to ensure human rights are protected in compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC).

  • Providing education and awareness to the SCDSB community about human rights and equity, and our role/responsibility to promote understanding of related policies and procedures, including religious accommodations, inclusion strategies and support tools for traditionally marginalized and underserved communities.

  • Providing confidential leadership and guidance and assist in the resolution of complaints in a confidential, fair, just and equitable manner.

DISCLAIMER

The HREO does not provide legal advice, legal representation or act as legal counsel to the SCDSB or to the complainant. To maintain appropriate independence and impartiality, the HREO will not provide advice or act in relation to a disputing party that places the HREO in an actual or perceived conflict of interest in relation to any other party to a dispute.
