This update provides highlights of the SCDSB Special Organizational Meeting held Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2023. John Dance, Director of Education, outlined the process pertaining to the election of chairperson and vice-chairperson.

Election of Chairperson
Trustee Jodi Lloyd, representing Orillia, Ramara, and Severn, was acclaimed to the position of chairperson. This will be Trustee Lloyd’s sixth term as chairperson.

Election of Vice-chairperson
Trustee Brandy Rafeek, representing Adjala-Tosorontio, Clearview, CFB Borden and Essa was acclaimed to the position of vice-chairperson. This will be Trustee Rafeek’s second term as vice-chairperson.

Election of Selection Committee member
Trustee Lisa-Marie Wilson was acclaimed as a member of the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee is made up of three members: the incoming chairperson, incoming vice-chairperson, and one other member elected by the Board. The role of the Selection Committee is to gather trustee preferences regarding committee membership and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for approval at the regular Board Meeting in December.

Remarks from the Chairperson

Chairperson Jodi Lloyd delivered the Inaugural Address to the Board. Chair Lloyd thanked the trustees for their ongoing trust, support, and commitment to facilitating the work of the Board in a professional, respectful, and meaningful way, and noted her commitment to working collectively as a Board. Chair Lloyd spoke to the numerous challenges impacting school communities and the importance of supporting students to ensure that their futures are bright, healthy, and sustainable. Chair Lloyd pointed to the need for schools to be community hubs that meet the needs of all students. Chair Lloyd spoke to the significant work that is required to address discrimination and racism that is present in society and the crucial role that education plays in combatting these issues and ensuring that schools are safe and welcoming environments. Chair Lloyd noted the many accomplishments over the last year, including the development of the Employment Equity Action Plan, the implementation of the renewed Strategic Priorities 2022-2027, actioning the recommendations of the Right to Read inquiry report, and establishing the Education Centre as an outdoor learning hub.
