OYAP

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB)

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) allows secondary school students to explore careers in the skilled trades while earning credits through Cooperative Education (Co-op)

What is OYAP?

OYAP takes place during a Cooperative Education course. It is not a separate program or course.

  • Students are enrolled in Co-op
  • Their placement is in a skilled trade (Construction, Service, Motive Power, Industrial)
  • The student becomes an OYAP participant while completing co-op

Through OYAP, students:

  • Earn co-op credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
  • Gain hands-on experience in a skilled trade
  • Develop workplace skills and safety awareness
  • May have hours count toward an apprenticeship

Participation in OYAP does not guarantee apprenticeship registration.

Who Can Participate?

Students must:

  • Be at least 15 years old
  • Have a minimum of 14 credits
  • Be enrolled full-time in secondary school
  • Be registered in a Cooperative Education course
OYAP and Apprenticeship

Some OYAP students may become registered apprentices while in high school if:

  • An employer agrees to sponsor them
  • Required forms are completed and approved

Apprenticeship registration depends on employer participation and student readiness.

OYAP-FAST (Focused Apprenticeship Skills Training)

OYAP-FAST is an apprenticeship focused timetable plan for students in Grades 11 and 12 who are committed to pursuing a skilled trade.

Students may:

  • Earn additional co-op credits in a skilled trade
  • Spend increased time at their placement
  • Graduate with an OYAP-FAST seal on their diploma

Students may indicate their interest in OYAP-FAST by selecting OYAP-FAST (BlockY) in myBlueprint during course selection.

*NOTE: Selecting OYAP-FAST (BlockY) does not guarantee acceptance or placement.

Implications of Selecting the OYAP-FAST Pathway:
When selecting Grade 11 and 12 courses, students should ensure they meet OSSD requirements while keeping options open for post-secondary programs. For apprenticeship-bound students, additional courses like Math or Physics may be needed for college or trade-specific requirements.
Final placement depends on readiness, availability, and approval.

How to Get Started

Students should:

  • Talk to their Guidance Counsellor
  • Speak with a Cooperative Education teacher
  • Indicate interest in OYAP-FAST during course selection.
