Character Education

Our board’s values are a key part of our commitment to character education. We refer to our values as our character attributes. The SCDSB’s ten Commit to Character attributes were selected through consultation with community leaders, organizations and school communities to reflect what Simcoe County communities consider important. These attributes are addressed, taught and modelled in all SCDSB elementary and secondary schools. Each month, our schools focus on one of our character attributes.

Caring (September) - we show kindness towards each other.
Cooperation (October) - we work together towards shared goals and purposes.
Courage (November) - we do the right thing even when it’s difficult.
Empathy (December) - we strive to understand and appreciate the feelings and actions of others.
Honesty (January) - we behave in a sincere, trustworthy and truthful manner.
Inclusiveness (February) - we include everyone in what we do and value their contributions.
Integrity (March) - we act justly and honourably in all that we do.
Optimism (April) - we maintain a positive attitude and have hope for the future.
Respect (May) - we treat ourselves, others and the environment with consideration and dignity.
Responsibility (June) - we are accountable for our actions and we follow through on commitments.

Character Education is a deliberate effort to nurture universal attributes that transcend racial, religious, socio-economic and cultural lines. It is a whole school effort to create a community that promotes the highest standards of student discipline and citizenship.

Attribute Songs

Students from ten SCDSB elementary schools composed songs in collaboration with singer-songwriter Gregg Lawless highlighting each of our Commit to Character attributes. Read the lyrics.
