About the HREO

The Human Rights and Equity Office (HREO) works independently, while reporting to the Director of Education, and is bound by confidentiality with a mandate to support and promote human rights and equity. The HREO is a safe and confidential space to bring forward concerns/matters related to discrimination, harassment and human rights and equity violations. Our goal is to create and maintain a safe, caring, inclusive learning and working environment by promoting and protecting the human rights of students, families, staff members and communities of the SCDSB by:

  • Building and maintaining a culture of respect and dignity for human rights including supporting the SCDSB in identifying and addressing systematic barriers and inequities or discriminatory practices to ensure human rights are protected in compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC).
  • Providing leadership, guidance, education and awareness to the SCDSB community about human rights and equity, and our role/responsibility to promote understanding of related policies and procedures, including religious accommodations, inclusion strategies, and support tools for equity-deserving, traditionally marginalized and underserved communities.
  • Providing a safe and trusted space to bring questions and concerns forward and facilitating the resolution of complaints in a confidential, fair, just, and equitable manner.

DISCLAIMER

The HREO does not provide legal advice, legal representation or act as legal counsel to the SCDSB or to the complainant. To maintain appropriate independence and impartiality, the HREO will not provide advice or act in relation to a disputing party that places the HREO in an actual or perceived conflict of interest in relation to any other party to a dispute.

Dreams Delayed - Upcoming consultation for parents/guardians and students

The SCDSB acknowledges the structural and systemic nature of anti-Black racism and discrimination in education. The SCDSB recognizes that Black students and staff have historically faced, and continue to face, barriers to equity and inclusion, due to deeply rooted racial biases and discriminatory practices.

In response to the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Dreams Delayed Addressing Systemic Anti-Black Racism and Discrimination in Ontario’s Public Education System report, the SCDSB is holding consultations for parents and families of Black students. The upcoming consultations are intended to gather feedback from the community on how the recommendations from the report can be incorporated at the SCDSB. The consultations will be held in various locations across the county, including virtually, this spring and will be facilitated by an external consultant.
