Board approves $691 million balanced budget for 2023-24 school year
Posted on 05/26/2023

At the May 24 Regular Meeting of the Board, trustees approved a balanced budget of $691 million for the 2023-24 school year. The budget, which focuses on students in alignment with the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Strategic Priorities, will see an increase of 3.4 per cent over the 2022-23 operating revenues. Highlights of the budget include:

  • Funding for additional staff to support student mental health and well-being;
  • Overall increase to the full-time staffing complement to support the significant growth in enrolment expected at the SCDSB.

“We have always operated with a balanced budget,” said Corry Van Nispen, Superintendent of Business and Facility Services. “I’m pleased that the 2023-24 budget continues this trend of fiscal responsibility and accountability. Preparing a budget of this magnitude is a tremendous amount of work for the financial reporting team and requires collaboration and support from the trustees, the Director of Education, and the senior administrative team,” he added.

The SCDSB continues to experience financial pressures in the areas of special education, transportation, student accommodation, and sick leave.

Funding is allocated to school boards from the Ministry of Education on a per-pupil basis, as well as through grants for specific program areas, and funding for capital priorities.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the areas of Well-being, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Community and Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
