SCDSB to change elementary schools PA Day to April 8 due to total solar eclipse
Posted on 02/09/2024

Due to the solar eclipse set to occur in our region, the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has made the decision to move the elementary school PA Day originally scheduled for April 26, 2024 to April 8, 2024.

The decision to alter the PA Day for elementary schools was based on consultation with a variety of stakeholders, including the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. The SCDSB examined various options to ensure student safety and minimize disruption to student learning.

SCDSB secondary schools will follow the approved 2023-24 school year calendar and will continue with the scheduled PA Day on April 26.

The change for elementary schools was made due to dismissal times being at the peak of the solar eclipse. As SCDSB secondary schools dismiss prior to the peak of the eclipse, their regular school day will not be impacted.

April 8

  • SCDSB elementary schools - PA Day, schools closed to students
  •  SCDSB secondary schools - open and running on regular schedule

 April 26

  • SCDSB elementary schools - open and running on regular schedule
  •  SCDSB secondary schools - PA Day, schools closed to students

The total solar eclipse provides a unique opportunity for teaching and learning. The SCDSB is developing resources for students and staff that will include a focus on safety.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the areas of Well-being and Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
