Guidance leadership award

SCDSB educator receives award from Ontario Guidance Leadership Association

The Ontario Guidance Leadership Association (OGLA) recently announced that Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) educator Erika Garrett is the recipient of the 2022-23 Joanne Twist Guidance Leadership Award.

Garrett was the guidance and career education curriculum leader at Eastview SS for over 14 years before transitioning to her current role as vice-principal at Maple Ridge SS. Her nominator, a colleague at Eastview SS, shared that she is a “passionate advocate, always seeking creative supports to put in place, especially for at-risk students, and emphasizing the role of the caring adult, which she also personifies every day” and that she is “skilled, informed, and compassionate in all of her dealings with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.”

The Joanne Twist Guidance Leadership award is presented annually to an educator who:

  • Advocates for student success  
  •  Supports the development of teachers in understanding and supporting the guidance program as a vehicle for students to realize their full potential  
  •  Mentors future guidance leaders 
  •  Provides leadership for the development and implementation of exemplary guidance programs  
  •  Works actively with students, parents/guardians, and teachers to provide suitable educational planning for students at the school level  
  •  Encourages administrators and other professional staff to understand and support guidance programs as fundamental to the successful school experience of all students  
  •  Shares and communicates ideas through workshops, conferences, or other professional experiences  
  •  Models collaboration and networking, recognizing, and connecting expertise locally and/or regionally  
  •  Is recognized as a leader in their school community
